Flashback Forecast: Wilds of Eldraine
WOE is a solid set, but not one of my favorites. I think of the format as defined by a trinity of archetypes: red aggro, green value, and blue control. In an Arena flashback setting, it’s pretty likely at least one of these lanes will be open. While the breadth of distinct decks isn’t vast,…

How MKM Green Beat the “Mediocrity” Allegations
During MKM preview season, green was widely viewed as a “tier 2” color, likely around par with blue and black but beneath white and red. While the other color evaluations were more or less correct, many players have recognized green-centered decks as one of the most reliable and powerful archetypes. So, what did we miss?…

The Case of the Pilfered Pie: Red Breaks and Bends in MKM
Over the past few years of Limited, red has been one of the most consistently powerful colors, only competing with white for the title. It’s an older beneficiary of Magic’s Commanderfication than white, but the impacts are felt today nonetheless. While it’s not always on top — DMU and MOM were too anemic in the…

Investigating MKM’s Investigate Commons
“If it also draws a card, it’s probably good” is a philosophy that will get you pretty far in Limited card evaluation. However, drawing a card outright and creating a Clue token are somewhat different things; the latter requires an additional 2 mana to see that card. If you’re not drawing it until next turn…

Year of Confidence
I started this blog as a soft new year’s resolution. I didn’t formalize that, since we all know the label is useless, but it was poetic in a small and pleasing way. Like any resolution, it wasn’t going to become a big, life-altering thing, but I knew that going in. I just needed a creative…

Tears of the Kingdom Log – Day 12
Completed the Great Plateau quest. Unnecessarily tedious to teleport back to the same shrine, but the Container was worth it. Helped the horn player, then went to Hateno. Starting to just ignore diversions and am sick of caves. Don’t care for this Cece plotline either. Going to take a break from playing; no longer having…

Tears of the Kingdom Log – Day 11
More side questing and shrines. Finally got climbing gear. Great Plateau has some annoyances; chasm quest had no way to Ascend back up, and Shrine of Resurrection is somehow a natural cave now. Noting the lack of new mechanics being used meaningfully in a lot of these quests.

Tears of the Kingdom Log – Day 10
No story progress, just filling out the map (Hyrule Field and Faron) and side quests. Realized I’m completely bored of regular-paced climbing. Warping is a necessity by now. Got another Great Fairy.

Tears of the Kingdom Log – Day 9
I had a feeling returning to the Hyrule Field hub was key, and damn was I right. Started by digging out a passage from the emergency shelter into Hyrule Castle. You’re given materials for hammers so it wasn’t annoying. In fact, it was the most engaging cave yet. Got the full Knight armor set. Annoyed…

Tears of the Kingdom Log – Day 8
Went to the nearby tower and was surprised by how close I was to Zora’s Domain. Decided to go and handle the quest there. Wasn’t anything special. A lot of back and forth, A to B. The sludge doesn’t do much to hold you back. I pity the player who doesn’t get the Zora Armor…
